Kegs and Eggs, the infamous early morning party on the Saturday before St. Patrick's Day, is occurring this year with slightly less options for thirsty students.
With the closing of popular midtown bars like Michael's and The Long Branch, University at Albany underage students may have to resort to partying later in the evening, or not at bars at all.
However, for those who do wish to venture out before sunrise, there are a few options for an eventful morning.
Cagney's, a bar located next to the old Pauly's Hotel on Central Avenue and actually serves eggs on Saturday morning, said UAlbany alumna Alysse Estes.
As for the early-morning drinking tradition, the mid-town bars typically open at 7 a.m., and spray beer all over their patrons.
This year, The Coliseum is opening, and according to UAlbany sophomore Ashley T., who's last name is not being used due to underage drinking legal implications, the crowd will be mostly Greek. The original Kegs and Eggs started here, located on Western Avenue, across from DiCarlito's pizzeria.
Professor M. Barley's, also known as the upstairs of The Colesium, doesn't really do the Kegs and Eggs celebration. Instead, a bartender said they will be doing a cornbeef and cabbage St. Patty's Day party.
Chubbys, located on Washington Avenue, usually has a line down to the corner of Quail Street about eight people wide, said bouncer and UAlbany alumnus Paul Pfeiffer. He said a flood of beer comes out the doors of the bar during the shenanigans, and the preparation to prevent being wet and cold includes wet suits, panchos and goggles.
"Beer burns when it gets in your eyes," Pfeiffer said.
Envy promoter and UAlbany senior Malcolm Marcoulides said the club "down-down" town on Pearl Street is currently discussing a party for later Saturday night.
"We have decided to push our specials later into the night to bring out the crowd that got trashed that morning for the event," he said.
"The midtown bars such as Michael's, Bogies, The Abbot, and Chubby's usually host the early morning event," Marcoulides said.
Kegs and Eggs goes hand-in-hand with the Albany St. Patrick's Day Parade, which starts at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The parade starts from the corner of Quail Street and Central Avenue and ends on Pearl Street. Capital District Celtic Cultural Association, South End Irish, Colonie Irish, North Albany Limericks, Menands St. Patrick's Club and others participate in this annual tradition.
According to a weather.com 10-day forecast, the high temperature on Saturday March 14 will be 38 degrees with partly cloudy skies and a 10 percent chance of precipitation. Sunrise will be at 7:09 a.m., right as celebrating students will be making their way to the bars.
